University Challenge
Background
University Challenge is one of the UK’s longest running quiz shows, initially airing in 1962. In that time, it has only had three hosts – Bamber Gascoigne, Jeremy Paxman, and now, Amol Rajan. A new host created an opportunity for the production to refresh many aspects of the show, from the set design and graphic design through to the question management and game technology. For the first time ever, questions were to be presented on a screen rather than cards. Although this breaks with tradition, it does mean that the all-important question management, scoring and bonus question protocols are easier to follow for the host and the production team. We designed and shipped a single 20U rack that contains both the primary and backup game systems, and can be rigged and tested by any of the studio technicians.
