Opening the doors

We took on our first unit in Caerphilly, Craig's hometown. It was just 18 sq m, not much bigger than a single car garage!

The very first gig

On the flight back from a production in China, we designed and wrote the software for our first project, a studio pilot for "Two Tribes". Just 6 days into trading, we were in studio recording this pilot, and then following straight on into a series of Pointless.

Our first credit!

Straight after recording the "Two Tribes" pilot we turned around for the start of Pointless Series 11, which opened with a fast-turnaround edit of a "Children In Need" special that aired on the 15th November.

Bigger offices needed

We'd outgrown our first unit in just three months - mainly due to acquiring more equipment so the time was right to start our expansion, moving just around the corner to a larger serviced unit in FlexSpace Caerphilly.

Our first press coverage

As part of a feature on new start-ups, we met with a journalist from the Western Mail and Echo who published a nice article celebrating KPX getting off to a flying start, setting the tone for future growth!

Employee #1

Peter Morgan joins Kinetic Pixel as a Systems Technician, and Employee number 1, straight from a First Class Honours in Sound, Lighting and Live Event Technology at the University of South Wales. It's a course that has given us a number of great graduates in the years since.

Skype TX Technology Access Programme

We officially became Microsoft Partners on the Skype TX Technology Access Programme (TAP). This gave us early access to beta Skype TX software and engineering reference units. This gave us the advantage of being the UK's first adopters and integrators of the system, rolling it out on a number of productions before Quicklink, Newtek and Reidel's products came to market.

Finally we have a van!

After months of hiring vans, and constantly chasing our tails getting the business off the ground, things start to settle into a rhythm - Here's our branded new van... and this van really did clock up the miles!

Happy birthday and Employee #2

October 2014 was our first anniversary and a significant milestone. Matt Payne, who'd been working with us since day 1 as a freelancer, joined us as a staff member. Susan Calman had the privilege of interviewing Matt for a behind-the-scenes peep at the nation's favourite quiz show, Pointless on BBC Two's "Too Much TV"

Our current home

The third and final office move in 2 years took us to a much needed larger, 500sq m, two storey building on Caerphilly Business Park. This gave us the room to expand and accommodate our growing team.

2015 Small Business of the Year

We won the "Business of the Year (Under 25 employees)" award at the Caerphilly Business Forum Awards 2015. This award proudly rounded off the year.

Game show Innovation

We became involved with Glenn Hugill's newest format, Five Gold Rings. In order to detect the rings on the LED floor, we designed and built a unique computer-vision based ‘learning’ system that could scan the floor in a fraction of a second and detect the position of the rings with pixel perfect accuracy. Every pixel counts and a single pixel can be the difference between winning and losing, so the accuracy of our unique technology was crucial to the show.

Loteri Cymru launches on S4C

We became involved with the weekly delivery of Loteri Cymru, a new all-Wales lottery raising funds for Welsh charities. The entire draw programme was put together in real-time in just 20 minutes between ticket sales closing and the results being aired during a 3-minute ad break.

Countdown

KPX wins the open tender to provide a new scoring system for Channel 4's iconic quiz show Countdown. Produced by ITV Studios and broadcast on Channel 4 since its debut in November 1982, Countdown is one of the longest-running gameshows in the world. Over 6000 episodes have been aired from Leeds Studios, Granada Studios and more recently Dock10 in Salford.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire reboot

Iconic show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire UK was rebooted with Jeremy Clarkson. We were invited by Stellify Media to take on the game technology systems and real-time graphics for the UK show. We were tasked with the industrial design and development of the new Fastest Finger First units through from concept to manufacture.

What makes a good game show?

"What makes a good game show?" That's the question Craig Hann, our Managing Director and co-founder, was asked to help answer, alongside key industry figures Colman Hutchinson and James Fox, in a feature for trade publication TVB Europe.

The Masked Singer

The BAFTA-winning "Masked Singer" used our turnkey rack-mounted wireless voting system
that has since been part of more talent shows and audience votes than we can count!

Pandemic Innovation

During the first lockdown, we worked closely with Studio 1 to assist in the launch of the LIT entertainment news network.

Saturday Night Takeaway virtual wall

In the Spring of 2021, during the Pandemic, we designed and delivered a 1000-strong virtual audience with play-along voting for Saturday Night Takeway. Our tech helped the ITV team win a BAFTA for Best Entertainment Show!

Caerphilly Observer feature

We were the subject of a feature article about KPX in the Caerphilly Observer, off the back of our Saturday Night Takeaway Virtual Wall. Features in the local press help with our visibility to potential staff, creates and maintains our links and our place in the local community.

KPX take to airwaves

Nathan, our Operations Director, talks to Gareth Williams from Ysbyty Ystrad FM. Talking about our involvement in various entertainment shows such as Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, Pointless, The Masked Singer, Countdown, and numerous others.

Question of Sport

We were invited to get involved in the refresh of the world's longest running TV sports quiz, A Question Of Sport, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020. This production marked the first of many collaborations with BBC Studios North.

Broadcast Tech Innovation Awards 2021

We were shortlisted as Finalists for the "Technical Innovation (Entertainment)" category of the 2021 Broadcast Tech Innovation Awards. This was a proud moment for KPX, as you can see in our smiles when we attended the glitzy ceremony in London.

Office refurbishment

Unit C just got a makeover! New desks, fresh colourful paint, stylish blinds, new furniture, hot-desk zones, more posters, and a cool fully stocked Coca Cola fridge – it's all part of our major refurbishment creating a inspiring workplace.

Uncapped leave policy launches

Light Entertainment can be demanding. That's why ensuring that our team get a healthy work-life balance is important to us. So, we introduced an uncapped leave policy, giving our dedicated employees the freedom to manage their time, leave, and rest days without worrying about counting the number of days they have remaining, or stressing about balancing out weekend work vs. office hours.

Bursting at the seams

We took on an additional unit across the road from our main offices, splitting up the functions of equipment storage and maintenance from design, engineering and software. You can see Cameron, our Engineering Manager, relieved for some much-needed room for delivery of our ever-expanding kit list.

What’s with all the ducks?

We wanted a gimmick, but there's two tenuous justifications too...

"KPX will help you get your Ducks in a row"

Programmers sometimes have a technique called Rubber Ducking when trying to solve problems!

Caerphilly Council Funding

We've been fortunate enough to receive support from the Caerphilly Enterprise Fund and UKSPF a few times in the past, and this press piece was in support of some funding for extra Ventuz software licences to support new projects. In an article on the Caerphilly Council's website, Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Cabinet member for Prosperity, Regeneration & Climate Change, commented. "We're delighted to support Kinetic Pixel with funding to help their business grow. We're looking forward to working positively with them in the future."

KPX team day out

It's not always about work as we value our social time together at KPX. We always look forward to our annual staff day out when we can relax doing axe throwing, crazy golf, escape rooms... to name a few! We too are partial to our local Quiz night, where we have reached the heady heights of first place!

Giving back to our community

Fix 2 Donate is a Community Project to help digital poverty for the less fortunate in South Wales. During the pandemic, digital exclusion became a matter of exclusion from society for many, and our society now relies on digital services more than ever. We wanted to help, so we've donated a stock of technical equipment and will continue to support such a worthwhile community project in any way we can. The Restart Project keeps a directory of similar initiatives across the UK.

Ten Years of Entertainment Technology

Our tenth anniversary seemed like something worth celebrating! We've had a minor rebrand, now trading as KPX rather than Kinetic Pixel, and launched a new website to go with it. This year also sees the start of KPX expanding their services to encompass motion graphics design and bespoke hardware and innovation.
